Between November of 1881 and July of 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted almost 900 paintings. Since his death, he has become one of the most famous painters in the world. Van Gogh’s paintings have captured the minds and hearts of millions of art lovers and have made art lovers of those new to world of art. He powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His work, all of it produced during a period of only 10 years, hauntingly conveys through its striking colour, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide. Among his masterpieces are numerous self-portraits and the well-known The Starry Night (1889).
Quotes from Van Gogh:
“An artist needn’t be a clergyman or a churchwarden, but he certainly must have a warm heart for his fellow men.”
“Do not quench your inspiration and your imagination; do not become the slave of your model.”
“A good picture is equivalent to a good deed.”
